The first four Tyler McChurch Memorial Scholarships, worth $5,000 each, will be awarded this spring by Cumberland University to high school graduates from Wilson County. The scholarships are for the 2016 – 2017 academic year. Award decisions will not focus solely on academic merit, but will take into consideration other marks of student excellence including involvement in athletics, extracurricular activities, school organizations and school functions. The Tyler McChurch Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2015 by the family and friends of McChurch who died in a car accident in 2013. These scholarships will be awarded to high school graduates from Wilson County who demonstrate the life skills that best resemble and represent Tyler’s memory. “Tyler lived his life in the same way he played the game of football—with integrity, determination and passion,” said Dan McChurch, Tyler’s father. Money for the scholarship is raised through a golf tournament, the Tyler McChurch Memorial Tournament, and the second annual event will be held on May 16. Applications and a complete description of the scholarship guidelines are now available and can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/tylermcchurch. The application deadline is April 1, 2016.
