Students may attend three semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer) split into two eight-week terms (A term and B term). This gives you six options in which to start the program. Students typically take one or two courses per term, depending on whether they want to graduate in one, two or more years. There is flexibility in the program to adjust to individual needs of pacing as work demands and graduate school are balanced to fit the graduate student’s life.

This course provides an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research on which sport and exercise pedagogy are (is) based. The course will address four main competencies including: 1) understand the nature of the scientific method, 2) describe various methods of quantitative and qualitative research, 3) read, understand and evaluate empirically based research, and 4) show ability to write a research proposal.

PE 5016 Motor Learning & Development
Designed to acquaint the candidate with the acquisition of basic skills, motor control, and psychomotor learning principles. These principles are applied across the various age groups. This course requires field experiences in a P-12 classroom during school hours.
Pursuant to Tennessee law, a Criminal History Record Investigation (background check) must be on file in the University Licensure Office before field experiences can be authorized.

This course is designed for teachers in schools to assist them in assessing student learning in pre/K-12 physical activity settings and to conduct program evaluation. PE 5520 Elementary School Physical Education
This course is designed to produce confident and competent elementary school physical education teachers. It is intended to provide an understanding of “the skill theme approach” to children’s physical education curriculum based on skill themes, movement concepts and generic levels of skill proficiency. Students will spend a significant amount of time creating developmentally appropriate lesson plans and how to deliver lessons appropriately within the elementary physical education setting.

This course is designed to provide content knowledge and methodological skill necessary for the physical education specialist to develop and implement a physical education curriculum for the middle/high school setting. Graduation Requirements
Candidates must complete the following requirements to earn the Master of Education degree with a major in Physical Education and Sports at Cumberland University.

Each candidate must successfully complete the required 36 credit hours of graduate coursework for the M.Ed. with a major in Physical Education and Sports within seven calendar years from the date of entry as a degree-seeking student.

Each candidate must be in good academic standing to meet graduation requirements.

Each candidate must file an Intent to Graduate form, pay the required graduation fees, and may participate in the Commencement Ceremony.

Each candidate must take and pass the CU Comprehensive Exam in the final semester of coursework to be eligible to graduate.
Academic Advisement
Entering M.Ed. major in PES candidates will be advised by the coordinator of the M.Ed. PES program. The program of study will comprise 36 credit hours of approved course work in Physical Education and Sports. Candidates holding a current and valid Tennessee teaching license seeking an additional endorsement in Physical Education must follow the appropriate course outline necessary for the additional endorsement in Physical Education. Each semester, individual candidate’s schedules will be reviewed and approved by the coordinator prior to authorization for registration.
