As the 2019 Nashville Area Career Fair approaches, it’s time to start thinking about how you can stand out to employers. Follow these best practices for a successful trip to the career fair:
1. Be prepared.
Knowing ahead of time which companies and employers will be represented at the fair is a great way to strategize. Make sure you look over resumes and cover letters beforehand to ensure you’ve included accurate and relevant information required by the employers you plan on meeting.
2. Bring lots of copies of your resume.
While you might plan on speaking to just a few employers during the fair, you may encounter companies or opportunities for which you didn’t expect to submit a resume. Bringing extra copies of your resume allows you to get your foot in the door with more employers.
3. Practice beforehand.
Practice makes perfect! Practicing your elevator pitch or even just how to introduce yourself to prospective employers makes the situation less intimidating. 4. Ask questions.
You should learn just as much about employers as they learn about you. Ask questions about the information employers are providing on available opportunities. This demonstrates to employers that you are actively listening to them and genuinely want to learn about what employment is like at their organization.
5. Follow-up with a “Thank You” letter.
Nothing makes potential employees stand out more than writing a “thank you” note. Reach out to the employers who took time to speak with you. Handwritten letters or emails should be sent no later than 24 hours after your meeting.
The 2019 Nashville Area Career Fair takes place Feb. 21 from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. at Nissan Stadium. Find out more about the Nashville Career Fair or register to attend here.
