The Instructional Leadership program provides recurrent opportunities to unite theory and practice via field-based experiences that integrate content knowledge through the integration of theory, reflection and applied leadership opportunities. M.Ed. Mission
The mission of the Master of Education in Instructional Leadership program is to develop transformational school leaders who will improve instructional capacity and student achievement.
Program Goal
In Cumberland University’s M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership you will learn how to improve teaching resources and student achievement through transformational school leadership. Students graduate from this program with a deep understanding of leadership in today’s schools.

Add-On Endorsements
A variety of add-on endorsements may be added to current Tennessee teachers’ licenses with coursework and passing Praxis scores. You may customize your degree to include add-on endorsements, or can take only the necessary courses to complete an add-on endorsement. Add-on endorsements at CU include English as a Second Language, Special Education, Biology, Physical Education, and Mathematics. Please contact Cumberland’s certification officer for details.
Instructional Leader Preparation Program Approval Review
Cumberland University’s Master of Education (Instructional Leadership) M.Ed. underwent a review by the Tennessee Department of Education and met or exceeded expectations for every standard. This comprehensive review of all Instructional Leadership programs was completed by a committee of State Board of Education and select representatives from Institutions of Higher Education. Our strong showing is testament to our faculty’s hard work, dedication, and proven records of effective leadership in K-12 schools.

Cumberland University is a private, four year institution of higher education and a member of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Cumberland University has twenty-two approved teacher education programs.

Cumberland University had 103 program completers and an average final GPA above the state average for 2010-2011 program completers.

Program completers perform at the same level as veteran teachers and other beginning teachers in the following areas:
- 4th-8th grade: Math, Reading/Language, Science, Social Studies and TCAP composite scores
- High School: End of Course Exam composite scores

Traditionally licensed program completers are more effective than other beginning teachers in 4th-8th grades: Science and high school End of Course exam composite scores.

Cumberland's program completers teaching 4th-8th grade Social Studies have more completers in the least effective percentile as compared to beginning teacher performance distributions across the state.
