Members of Lebanon-area Girl Scout Troop 452 earned their First Aid Badge by using nursing lab resources during a recent visit to Cumberland University’s Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions.

The Girl Scouts tested out Mega-Code Kelly, one of the robotic simulation mannequins found in the Rudy School’s nursing lab, which allows users to listen to normal and abnormal heart and lung sounds.

Also in attendance were firefighters from the Lebanon Fire Department who shared important first aid information and let the Girl Scouts tour a Lebanon Fire Department fire truck.

Troop 452 leader Kathy McDearman, who is also an associate professor of Nursing in the Rudy School, said the Girl Scouts’s experience in the Cumberland labs was invaluable.

“Thank you to the Cumberland University School of Nursing for allowing Troop 452 to use the School of Nursing classrooms and labs,” McDearman said. “We were able to help our Girl Scouts earn the First Aid Badge in a hospital-like setting which made learning much more impactful.”

McDearman said she believes the opportunity to work with the technology in the Rudy School can motivate the Girl Scouts to consider pursuing a degree in nursing, and possibly, one from Cumberland.

“Hopefully, this experience inspired some of the Girl Scouts to consider nursing as a future career and to choose Cumberland University School of Nursing to get them there,” McDearman said.
