Endowed Scholarships
Cumberland University awards various endowed scholarships which have specific requirements for eligibility. These awards have been generously donated by families, businesses, and civic organizations that are dedicated to assisting students further their education. A listing of these scholarships can also be found in the catalog. The deadline for applications to be submitted to the Financial Aid Office is July 26th.

A.C. Wharton Sr. Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Wilson County, Tennessee student majoring in business who needs financial support to attend college and who has been accepted as an entering freshman. The scholarship honors Mary and A C Wharton, Sr., well-known and respected business and civic leaders in Lebanon, Wilson County. It was established in 1989 by their children, including A C Wharton, Jr., Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee who is a past member of the Cumberland University Board of Trust.

Adonai Foundation Inc. Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Y. M. Chu established this scholarship in 2010 in honor of Dr. Ernest L. Stockton, president of Cumberland University from 1958 to 1983. Dr. Stockton was president while Mr. Chu was a student at Cumberland. This scholarship benefits full-time undergraduate and graduate students who are either an international student, are receiving financial support through Ernest L. Stockton, Jr. Scholarship, or who have special financial and/or emergency circumstances as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Alma & Fannie Baird Scholarship
The late Senator William D. Baird, BA, LL.B (1930, 1931) established this scholarship in memory of his mother, Fannie Baird, and wife, Alma Counts Baird. The awards are need-based and awarded to deserving young men and women of Wilson County, Tennessee. Transfer students must have a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA, and entering freshmen must also have a minimum 18 composite on the ACT or equivalent on the SAT.

Amy Jo Grissim Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time education major or to a student pursuing a pre-medical academic area of focus. This award is renewable if the recipient maintains full-time status and a 3.0 GPA. The student must be recommended by the Student Financial Services Committee and approved by a faculty member of the pre-medical or education program. Mrs. Grissim was an elementary school teacher and taught many years in the Lebanon Special School District in Tennessee. Her husband was a local farmer and businessman.

Arah George Bradley King Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by Judge and Mrs. Rodney V. Ahles in memory of Mrs. Ahles’ sister. Awarded annually to a junior or senior student with a major in elementary education and in need of financial assistance, this scholarship is given to a student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Mrs. King was a 1939 graduate of Cumberland University and taught for many years in elementary schools in Tennessee and New Jersey.

Audrah Dee Endowed Scholarship
Established by Ms. Karen Hardin in honor of her daughter, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior student majoring in Special Education.

Bascom and Alice Cooksey, Sr. Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student from Wilson County, Tennessee with a minimum entering ACT score of 20 or a high school GPA of 2.5 or if enrolled in Cumberland or as a transfer student shall have a GPA of 2.5 based on a 4.0 scale.

Benny Gamboa Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to an incoming freshman soccer player. The recipient must have an ACT score of at least 18 and a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship may be renewed provided the recipient maintains full-time student status and a GPA of at least 2.5 while enrolled at Cumberland University. Mr. Gamboa was a sophomore psychology major and a member of the varsity soccer team at the time of his death in a traffic accident.

Betty Smallwood Endowed Scholarship
Mrs. Brenda Callis established this scholarship in memory of her dear friend Mrs. Betty Smallwood. Recipients shall be full-time undergraduate students with special financial circumstances. Preference is given to students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Bill Allen Martin Memorial Scholarship
The recipient must be a full-time student majoring in elementary education with a minimum GPA of 3.0, partially or wholly self-supporting, and in need of financial assistance. Additionally, the recipient must display a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. Mr. Martin, a 1939 graduate of Cumberland University, was an educator and farmer and was deeply devoted to education throughout his life.

Blanche Catron Music & Arts Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is awarded annually to a resident of Wilson County, Tennessee. The recipient of the tuition-only scholarship must have an entering GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale and must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Music and Arts. Mrs. Catron was awarded the Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) from the University in 1998 and The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2001.

Bradley Family Memorial Scholarship
The recipient shall be a full-time junior or senior elementary education major with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and who has displayed a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. The scholarship is need-based.

Caroline Perry & Mecca Ann Perry Cleveland Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to current teachers under contract in local school systems who wish to return to Cumberland to earn the Master of Arts in Education degree. The funds will be divided among 20 students annually. Mrs. Cleveland was a student at Cumberland University in the 1920s and later was a member of the University faculty. Miss Perry was a 1923 graduate of Cumberland University. The two sisters were teachers for many years. Their scholarship was funded by a bequest from Mrs. Cleveland’s estate.

Castle Heights Military Academy Scholarship
Preference for this award is given to Castle Heights Military Academy alumni and/or their children. This scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate level students. Financial need shall not be the sole determining factor. The representatives of the CHMA Alumni Association review the applicants and make recommendations on the recipients.

Charles C. & Mary Lorraine Wilson Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded based on need to a student majoring in nursing who has displayed outstanding citizenship. The recipient must have a high school grade point average of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale and an ACT score of 18 (or equivalent SAT score). The recipient will be chosen by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the nursing faculty.

Charles William McKee Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Master of Science in Public Service Management (MSP) program at Cumberland University. The award is named for the current Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Bill McKee, who has served as the advisor to MSP students since the beginning of the program.

Charles Wood Arnold Memorial Scholarship
Cumberland officials are designated to distribute this award to young men and women of Wilson County who are worthy of assistance and who are unable to obtain financial assistance otherwise. The scholarship was established by the estate of Mr. Charles Wood Arnold, a Wilson County, Tennessee farmer and friend of the University.

Colonel Bernie and Mary Helen Bass Endowed Scholarship
Col Bernie Bass graduated from Gordonsville High School in 1937, and began to attend Cumberland University. World War II interrupted his education. Bernie became a fighter pilot, serving with distinction through two combat tours and 114 combat missions in North Africa and Europe. Following the end of the war, Bernie and Mary Helen Whitfield of Perry, FL, were married and settled in Lebanon to complete his Cumberland education.
After graduation, Col Bass was called into service for the Korean War and remained in the US. Air Force until his retirement in 1976, after serving in Europe and Vietnam. Col Bass was proud of his service to our country.
Bernie and Mary Helen settled in Lebanon in 1978, and both were active in church, civic, and Cumberland University activities. Bernie was inducted into the Cumberland University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. Col Bass also served as a Trustee of the University.
Mary Helen Bass passed away in 2008, and Col Bass in 2010.
The recipient of this scholarship will be a full-time undergraduate student that is a U.S. Citizen and has and maintains a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students graduating from high schools in Smith and Wilson Counties in Tennessee.

Cumberland Merit Badge University Eagle Scout Scholarship
This scholarship was established with proceeds from the Cumberland Merit Badge University held annually by the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving high school graduate who is an Eagle Scout and enrolled full-time. First consideration for students will be given to scouts from the Walton Trail District, then Middle Tennessee Council, then scouts from across the nation. The scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of 8 semesters provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Dallas Floyd Memorial Scholarship
Recipient shall be a full-time Cumberland student in need of financial assistance with a minimum 3.0 GPA who has displayed a balanced and well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. Mr. Floyd was a successful entrepreneur in the outdoor amusement business. The scholarship was established in his memory in 1991 by his children, Ann and J. D. Floyd, and Billy and Jane Floyd Baxter.

David Alexander McCandless Scholarship
This scholarship is to be awarded to a Cumberland junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher who is majoring in a Liberal Arts discipline or in Education. Recipient must not be involved in varsity athletics. The McCandless scholarship was established in 1989 by Mrs. Frances McCandless Roby in memory of her father, an 1894 graduate of Cumberland University. Mr. McCandless was a highly respected attorney and in the late 1920s was Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Digitar, Inc./Dixie Taylor Scholarship
The award is made to a Wilson or Trousdale County high school graduate who must be a full-time student in the Cumberland University Nursing Program. The recipient must plan to become an employee in the health care sector and must have attained the rank of junior.

Dr. H. Bert Coble Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in vocal, choral, keyboard, or music education who has a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and with a minimum ACT of 20 or an equivalent SAT score. The student must show outstanding performance ability and have displayed exemplary citizenship. The award may remain with the student as long as a 2.80 GPA is maintained and the recipient remains a music major in good standing with the University. The award is available for a maximum of eight semesters. Dr. Coble is a Professor Emeritus at Cumberland University.

Dr. Thomas Richard Puryear Endowed Scholarship
A Wilson County native, Dr. Thomas Richard Puryear grew up on a farm under depressed economic conditions. With a dream of becoming a physician, he joined the Army to help pay for college expenses and graduated from Cumberland University in 1941 and from Vanderbilt University in 1944 with his medical degree. Married to Louis Graves for fifty years, Dr. Puryear never had children of his own. He did, however, believe in young people and the promise of the future that they helped. Many students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to attend a University were given money by Dr. Puryear to pay for their education. The only condition on the gift was not that it be paid back to him, but rather that the receiver afford the same opportunity for other struggling students. Keeping the circle of giving and aid to those in need was a strong value of his.

Earl F. & Allie Coe Baker Scholarship
Mrs. Allie Coe Baker established this scholarship through her estate to assist students from Watertown High School (Tennessee) to further their education. The scholarship shall be awarded based upon the applicant’s scholastic and academic abilities as well as financial need. Selection will be made in conjunction with Watertown High School faculty who will recommend recipients each year. The late Mrs. Baker was a beloved teacher in Wilson County schools for 46 years.

Earl Young Barbour Memorial Scholarship
Recipient must be the highest academically ranked football player at the University from either Wilson or Putnam County, Tennessee with a GPA of at least 2.80. Recipient must be a returning member of the football squad and must be recommended by the head football coach and athletic director. Mr. Barbour, a football player and 1948 graduate of Cumberland University, was a successful furniture manufacturer. This scholarship was established in his memory by his wife, Mrs. Peggy Barbour.

Edward L. & Aileen O. Jennings Scholarship
This award is given to an undergraduate student at Cumberland University who is worthy of assistance and is unable to obtain financial assistance otherwise. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Effie Holloway Sloan Scholarship
This award is given to a resident of Wilson County, Tennessee who is a junior or senior at Cumberland University majoring in education and who plans to teach at the elementary or secondary level. Education faculty members may make recommendations. This scholarship was established in 1986 by the late Eugene Holloway Sloan, a 1928 graduate of Cumberland University, in memory of his mother.

This scholarship was established by Mr. Louis R. Linx in memory of his wife and is awarded to an incoming Cumberland University freshman.

Forrester Family Scholarship
Recipient shall be a full-time Cumberland student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who has displayed a balanced and well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. The scholarship was established in memory of Robert L. and Christine Forrester.

Frances K. Shattuck Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the Estate of Frances K. Shattuck in support of students at Cumberland University.

Frances S. Robson Scholarship
The recipient of the Frances S. Robson Endowed Scholarship must have financial need to be eligible for this award. Additionally, an applicant must have a high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and an ACT score of 20 or higher or equivalent SAT score. The award will be made for no more than eight semesters. The late Mrs. Robson, a resident of Florida, graduated from Cumberland University in 1933.

Francis George Moscardelli Memorial Scholarship
Established through the generosity of Mrs. Alexa Moscardelli in memory of her late husband, this scholarship honors Mr. Moscardelli’s twenty-three years of service as a vital member of the University’s Board of Trust. Recipients must be a “first generation student” as classified by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Recipients must have financial need and have a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale and a minimum score of 21 on the ACT or equivalent on the SAT. Preference is given to out-of-state students. Scholarship awards may be renewed for up to, but no longer, than four years if a GPA of 3.00 is maintained.

Frank G. Clement Memorial Scholarship
This award is made to high school graduates who exhibit the leadership and speaking abilities which marked the life of the late Governor of Tennessee, Frank G. Clement, and who have displayed a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience.

Fred G. Page Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a freshman who is a graduate of a Wilson County, Tennessee high school with a 3.0 GPA and who is enrolling as a full-time student. This scholarship is renewable if there is not a deserving freshman the following year, provided full-time status and a 2.75 GPA is maintained. Any renewal is limited to a maximum of four years. The recipient will be recommended by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Mr. Page was an accountant who had a practice in Nashville, Tennessee.

General Howard F. Butler Scholarship
The recipient shall be a full-time Cumberland University student who has displayed strong leadership qualities, a yearning for knowledge, and awareness in the area of academic study he/she has chosen to pursue. The scholarship was established in 1990 by the friends of the late General Butler, a 1934 graduate of the Cumberland University School of Law. Serving more than twenty years in the United States Air Force and the Tennessee National Guard, General Butler was also a practicing attorney in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Life Trustee of Cumberland University until his death in 1992.

Gwendolyn McFarland Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Gwendolyn McFarland, an enthusiastic supporter of the fine arts in Wilson County, Tennessee. Mrs. McFarland’s special love for Cumberland University continues through the annual awarding of the scholarship. This award will be given to a declared Fine Arts major. The recipient must have an ACT composite score of 20 with a 3.0 High School GPA. Current undergraduate student applicants must have a GPA of 3.0. This scholarship may be renewed if the recipient maintains full-time status and a 3.0 GPA. Mrs. McFarland was the widow of Dr. Sam McFarland, a long-time physician who practiced in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Harry & Mary Neil Vickers Scholarship
This scholarship may be awarded to any deserving resident of Cannon County, Tennessee or to a resident who lives in the 16th or 21st districts of Wilson County, TN. The recipient must have a high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and an ACT score of 20 or higher (or equivalent SAT score). The scholarship is need-based and will not be given for more than eight semesters.

HD “Boone” & Sarah Swain Scholarship
The Scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student attending Cumberland University who is majoring in Biology or Nursing. Priority consideration for this scholarship will be given to a student with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Financial need will be the determining factor in selecting the scholarship recipient and will be determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Once a student is selected as a recipient of The H. D. “Boone” and Sarah Swain Scholarship, the scholarship will be available to renew each year provided the student remains in good standing with the University according to the Student
Handbook and maintains a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The award is made for no more than eight (8) semesters to any one student. Awarded funds may be used for tuition, room and board, fees and books.

Heifner Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time Cumberland University junior or senior with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher whose major is Interdisciplinary Studies. Preference is given to a student in the Humanities and Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Studies Program, with a concentration in the behavioral sciences. The scholarship may be renewed provided the recipient maintains full-time status and a 3.00 GPA. The scholarship was established in 1997 by Dr. Fred E. Heifner, Jr., professor of Anthropology, Philosophy, and Religion, and his wife, Jo Ann, in honor of their sons, Kevin Heifner, Todd Heifner, and Brad Heifner.

Henry and Sue Schumpf Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schumpf established this scholarship in 2008 to support nursing students at Cumberland University. This award will benefit full-time undergraduate nursing students who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be in good standing with the University.

Henry Goodpasture Endowed Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1993 by the late Henry Goodpasture, a 1921 graduate of Cumberland University School of Law and a long-time supporter of the University.

Homer Dean Tomlinson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Homer Dean Tomlinson by his wife, Peggy Franklin Tomlinson, Mr. Tomlinson, a native of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, attended Cumberland University in 1960 through 1962. He taught school in Wilson County, Tennessee and was principal at Tucker’s Crossroads. Additionally, he taught at Mt. Juliet Jr. High, and then became Assistant Principal of Mt. Juliet High where he served 13 years. He was an educator, a civic leader, and loved by many people. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate with an 18 ACT score (or equivalent SAT score) and 2.5 GPA. This award is renewable for four years or eight semesters provided full-time status and a 2.5 GPA are maintained.

Imogene Bradley Ahles Memorial Scholarship
This award is made to a junior or senior business major with an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher who demonstrates a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. The scholarship was established in 1993 by Judge Rodney V. Ahles, LL.B. (1958), in memory of Mrs. Ahles, BA (1946), who served Cumberland University in various administrative roles for approximately fifty years.

Ina G. Welborn Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded based on need to a student majoring in nursing. The awarded funds may be used for tuition and books. The recipient will be chosen by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the nursing faculty.

J.B. Leftwich CHMA Editors’ Scholarship
Established by the Castle Heights National Alumni Association in honor of the late J. B. Leftwich. The scholarship will benefit one full-time undergraduate sophomore or above student with a declared dual major in Secondary Education and English at Cumberland University. Applicants with a demonstrated interest in expository or creative writing or with a special interest or experience in journalistic writing, communications (new media) or photography will be giving special consideration. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

James & Gay Chamberlain Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Gwendolyn McFarland of Lebanon, Tennessee by Mr. James and Mrs. Gay Chamberlain. Mr. Chamberlain is an alumnus of Cumberland University and Mrs. Chamberlain is the daughter of Mrs. McFarland. This scholarship is to be awarded annually to a full-time Cumberland University student from Wilson County, Tennessee majoring in music. To receive and retain the scholarship, the student must have and maintain a 2.50 GPA. Mrs. McFarland was a supporter of the fine arts in the local community and at the University.

James C. Hatcher Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1990 by friends of the Hatcher family in memory of James C. “Jimmy” Hatcher, who was a supporter of Cumberland University and was dedicated to secondary and higher education in Wilson County. Mr. Hatcher was dedicated to secondary and higher education in Wilson County, Tennessee. Mr. Hatcher taught and coached at Castle Heights Military Academy and at Mt. Juliet High School. The recipient of this award must be an incoming freshman who meets admission standards.

James L. Bomar Scholarship
This scholarship, honoring the late State Senator, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House of Representatives of the State of Tennessee, is awarded to a Cumberland junior or senior who has displayed a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. In addition, the recipient must demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher and a yearning for knowledge and awareness in his/her chosen area of study.

James S. Legg Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in business. Mr. Legg graduated from the Cumberland University School of Law in 1930 and received the “Award of the Phoenix” from the University in 1977. He was president of the Jaynelle Shoe Company and for several years hosted a series of business conferences on the University campus. The scholarship was established after his death in 1984 by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Legg.

Jeanette Cantrell Rudy Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Nursing
Mrs. Jeanette C. Rudy, former University Board Chair, and namesake of the Rudy School of Nursing & Health Professions established this scholarship in 2010. This award will benefit undergraduate students in nursing and admitted to the upper level nursing program at Cumberland University. Preference will be given to recipients who are returning Cumberland students. Transfer students will also be eligible. Continuing Cumberland students must have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.5 during freshman and sophomore years at CU and had an entering ACT score of 22 with equivalent SAT. Students transferring into Cumberland must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 for all college-level work. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 to continue receiving the scholarship.

Jeanette Cantrell Rudy Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Jeanette C. Rudy and is awarded to nursing majors who are enrolled in nursing classes. Recipients are selected by the Office of Student Financial Aid based on financial need. Recipients must have at least a 2.8 GPA. Preference is to be given to a registered nurse who is returning to upgrade his/her education and certification to a BSN. Mrs. Rudy was a former chair of the University’s Board of Trust and was awarded the Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) from Cumberland in 1990. She was also a Registered Nurse (RN).

Jim & Martha Bradshaw Scholarship
This award is available to a full-time student majoring in nursing, and is renewable. Recipient must maintain a GPA of 3.00 and reside in Wilson County, Tennessee. This Scholarship was established by Mrs. Martha Bradshaw and her late husband Dr. James C. Bradshaw in 1997. Mrs. Bradshaw is a member of the Cumberland University Board of Trust and Dr. Bradshaw was a practicing physician in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Jimmie Wall Farris Scholarship
This scholarship is need-based and is awarded to a deserving Cumberland student. Mrs. Farris is a 1947 graduate of Cumberland University. The scholarship was established in her honor by her husband, the late William W. Farris, an Emeritus member of the Cumberland University Board of Trust.

Joe M. Phillips Scholarship
The recipient must meet all entrance criteria and be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Cumberland University. The scholarship was established by Dr. Joe M. Phillips, Jr. in 1991 in memory of his father, Joe M. Phillips, Sr., who was a 1922 A.B. graduate and also received his LL.B degree from the Cumberland University School of Law in 1925.

John E. Mayfield Scholarship
Established in 2016 by John E. Mayfield, this scholarship was created to encourage and assist students from Cheatham County, Tennessee to attend Cumberland University. The scholarship recipient will be a high school graduate of Cheatham County with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Financial need will be considered in selecting scholarship recipients. Once a student is selected as a recipient of a Mayfield Scholarship, the award will automatically renew each year as long as the student remains in good standing with the University and maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA. This award can be made for no more than two semesters to any one student. Recipients must complete a scholarship application and essay and submit by the appropriate due date.

John J. Duncan Scholarship
The award is made in memory of United States Representative John J. Duncan, Sr., a graduate of the Cumberland University School of Law, former mayor of the City of Knoxville, TN, and a longtime member of the United States Congress, representing the second district of Tennessee.

John T. Woodfin Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Cumberland junior or senior majoring in the liberal arts with an academic area of focus in pre-law or pre-medicine and is a resident of the State of Tennessee. Established in 1988 by Virginia Woodfin, widow of John T. Woodfin, this scholarship honors Mr. Woodfin, who was a civic leader and businessman from Rutherford County, Tennessee.

June and Bill Heydel Endowed Scholarship for the Fine Arts
This scholarship was established to honor June and Bill Heydel for their dedication and support of the Fine Arts at Cumberland. It is awarded to a deserving full-time student who has a minimum ACT score of 20 or equivalent SAT score, and a minimum GPA of 2.75. The scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains the above standards and is active in the Fine Arts. Mr. and Mrs. Heydel both have received honorary degrees from the institution. Mr. Heydel currently serves as a member of the Board of Trust.

Kay Turner Endowed Scholarship
Kay Turner was a loving wife, mother, and “Nana.” She was an active church member and graduate of Carson Newman College with a BA in Education. Kay loved to read. She always had a stack of books which she was reading. She kept a “book journal” with her thoughts on what she read. She frequently shared books with family and friends. The library was one of her favorite places to visit. An educator at heart, Kay loved children. She devoted her life to teaching them and encouraging the love of books. She taught English and History in the public schools. She regularly invested in the lives of children and her community. Kay was a “student of the Bible” and taught second-grade Sunday School for thirty-plus years. She taught English as a second language (ESL) through her church. She participated in prayer groups that prayed for their city, state, and country.
The recipient of this scholarship will be a full-time education undergraduate student that has and maintains a 2.8 GPA.

Kimberly Cragwall Pace Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship was established to celebrate Kimberly’s life and work and her impact on the Wilson County school system to keep Karlie, her daughter, in regular classes so she was not classified as special needs per the school system. Kim’s work on the Wilson County Board of Education to ensure that there are registered nurses at each school so children with emergent medical needs could be cared for more in a more urgent fashion. Kim’s selfless availability to the many families of children with disabilities wherein she could advocate for them and their families. Kim’s determination to ensure that her daughter, Karlie, was accepted into Cumberland University and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree, which she achieved. Kim’s brave fight to overcome cancer that she sustained until the very end. This scholarship will benefit a full time undergraduate student that is a Wilson County resident that has been diagnosed with a disability defined by the ADA. Recipient must maintain a 3.0 to be renewed and for no more than 8 semesters.

L.C. & Mary Argo McKee
This endowed scholarship is given annually to a non-traditional adult student majoring in elementary or secondary education. The recipient must have financial need and previously have achieved a 3.0 GPA. A 3.0 GPA must be maintained during the award period. The scholarship honors the memory of L.C. and Mary Argo McKee. Mr. McKee was a grocer in Nashville, TN and Mrs. McKee was a long-time teacher in Metro Nashville Schools. This scholarship was established by their sons, one of whom is a physician in Nashville, and the other is the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cumberland University.

This scholarship will be awarded to a junior undergraduate student who maintains at least a 3.0 GPA and is a business administration, economics, or marketing/management major.

Landis & B.B. Gullett Scholarship
Established through the generosity of the B. B. Gullett Family, the Landis and B. B. Gullett Scholarship is available to any student at Cumberland who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher and is in the top half of their class and has an ACT score of 21 or higher, or an equivalent SAT score. The recipients will be known as the Gullett Scholars and can be continued from year to year if the students maintain their academic standing with Cumberland University. Any students who continue to receive the above scholarship must reapply annually. This award will be given to students based on need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Mr. Gullett was an attorney in Nashville, Tennessee, and partner in the law firm of Gullett, Sanford, Robinson, and Martin.

Larry & Bettye Stone Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established to celebrate the life and legacy of Larry and Bettye Stone by their children and grandchildren. Larry and Bettye Jane Stone were married for 68 years. Larry was a veteran and served in the United States Army during the Korean War and in the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked for 40 years for Texas Eastern Gas Pipeline Company as the Superintendent of Communications/SCADA. Bettye had a very successful career at Hartmann Luggage and TRW-Ross Gear in Lebanon before turning her attention and energy to civic duties. She served in many civic organizations, but the most important one to her was being the Chairman of the Board of the Wilson County Library. You could always find Bettye reading numerous books at the same time and she believed reading was the best way to educate young people. The two loved and supported their church, First United Methodist Church of Lebanon, TN and participated in many of the activities. The family has a bench on campus with the quote, “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” John Bunyan. “We think this is the true meaning of how our parents operated every day. They gave so much to everyone and never, ever expected to get anything in return”, son, Tommye Stone.
This scholarship will benefit a full-time undergraduate student who has and maintains a 3.0 GPA. The first priority will be given to a Wilson County, TN highschool graduate, second priority will be given to a veteran student from any branch of service, third priority will be given to a high school graduate from any high school in Tennessee, and fourth priority will be given to any high school graduate from the United States. This scholarship will be awarded based solely on merit and need. Funds from this scholarship can be used for tuition, room and board, books and fees.

Leonard J. Ballard Scholarship
Dr. Ray Farley established this scholarship in memory of his brother. Mr. Ballard was a businessman and long-time resident of Lebanon, Tennessee. Recipients shall be full-time undergraduate students pursuing a major within the School of Science, Technology & Business. Preference is given to students from Wilson and Smith Counties in Tennessee.

Lillian P. Bryan & Lucille Phillips Davis Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Lillian P. Bryan, preference is given to applicants from Watertown, Tennessee, and secondarily to applicants from Wilson County, Tennessee, or other applicants at the discretion of the University. Scholarships may be awarded to students preparing to be nurses or elementary school teachers.

Lillian White Sloan Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who has published in a magazine, newspaper or in other print media in the current or previous year. The English faculty will be solicited for recommendations. Mrs. Sloan, a 1929 graduate of Cumberland University School of Law, was a retired journalist. The scholarship was established in her honor in 1986 by her late husband, Eugene Holloway Sloan.

This endowed tuition-only scholarship is awarded based on need to a sophomore, junior, or senior student who resides in Wilson County, Tennessee.

Lowell Afton Bogle Scholarship
This award is given to a deserving resident of Wilson County, TN who has a minimum high school GPA of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale. This award is need-based and will be made for no more than eight (8) semesters to any particular student. The scholarship was established in 2000 through the generosity of the Bogle family and Lowell Afton Bogle. Mr. Bogle always enjoyed helping others, and this endowed scholarship fulfills his desire to help students pursue their dream of a college education.

Lunette Gore Partlow Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time junior who has a declared major in the Fine Arts with a concentration in art and who has earned an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. The scholarship is renewable provided full-time status and 3.0 GPA is maintained. The scholarship was established in 1995 by Dr. Suzanne Gore in memory of her grandmother, an artist and art teacher who taught for thirty-two years in public school systems of Macon, Trousdale, Smith, and Wilson Counties in Tennessee and who was “artist in residence” at Cumberland University for 22 years.

Margaret Elizabeth Wilson Beasley Scholarship
This award is made to a graduating senior of Smith County or Gordonsville High Schools (Tennessee) who has earned a minimum of 3.25 GPA on a scale of 4.00. The recipient must be recommended by Cumberland’s Office of Student Financial Aid and be approved by the recipient’s high school principal. Preference is made to a student who plans to major in education. The scholarship in honor of Mrs. Beasley, who attended Cumberland University in 1931, was established in 1995 by her children, Thomas Wilson Beasley, Mary Elizabeth Beasley Enoch, Alma Katherine Beasley Parker, and Lewis Cass Beasley, Jr.

Margaret Freeman Farmer Scholarship
This scholarship is based on need and given to a student majoring in music or business who has displayed outstanding citizenship. The recipient must have a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum ACT score of 20 or an equivalent SAT score. The recipient may continue to receive the award if a 2.8 GPA is maintained, shows normal progress towards graduation, and remains in good standing with the University. The award will not be given for more than eight (8) semesters. Mrs. Farmer was educated in the public schools of Lebanon, TN through the eleventh grade. She attended Cumberland Preparatory School.

Mark P. White Memorial Scholarship
Patricia Sullins (a family friend), Richard J. and Linda M. White of Lebanon, Tennessee, and other individuals in the community established this scholarship in 1985 in memory of the White’s son who died in a traffic accident in 1984. Mark was a Lebanon High School graduate and a student at UT Knoxville. His brother John graduated from Cumberland University in 1990. This scholarship fund became endowed in 1993 and is a lasting memorial to a young man who cared deeply about education and was committed to completing his studies.

Marshall Ledbetter, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is to be awarded to a junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher who has displayed a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience. The student must also display strong leadership qualities and a yearning for knowledge and awareness in the area of chosen academic study. The late Mr. Ledbetter was prominent in state politics and founded the Victory Van Lines in 1932.

Martha Duff Adkerson Scholarship
Established by Susan A. Dismukes and Sandra A. Malone to honor their late mother. The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with a high school GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. The award is renewable to recipients maintaining a 2.80 GPA and making normal progress toward a degree as a full-time student.

Martha Roberts McCoin & Charlene McCoin Kozy Endowed
Previously known as the Martha Roberts McCoin Scholarship and the Charlene McCoin Johnson Kozy Scholarship, this award has been merged into one scholarship. Awards from this newly combined fund will benefit an undergraduate and/or graduate student attending Cumberland University’s Labry School of Science, Technology and Business who has financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. A previous recipient is eligible to re-apply for this scholarship each year.

Mrs. Carrie McClain Hatfield established this scholarship in honor and memory of her sisters. The award will benefit one full-time undergraduate student majoring in nursing at Cumberland University. Recipient must be from the state of Tennessee and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

This scholarship was established through the Estate of Miles Fate Christian. Mr. Christian was born in Viola, Tennessee and attended Castle Heights Military Academy before entering Cumberland University. He graduated in 1940 with a degree in chemistry and social science.

Millard & JJ Oakley Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Cumberland University Administration and the friends of Millard and JJ Oakley in celebration of their numerous contributions to higher education and the State of Tennessee. Millard is a 1951 Cumberland Law School Alum and successful attorney and businessman from Livingston, TN.
JJ, graduated from West Virginia with a bachelor of science in nursing. She earned a masters in nursing and a law degree from the University of Tennessee. The Oakley’s reside in Overton County and have been married for nearly 40 years.
This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student from the Upper Cumberland Region of TN (Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith, Van Buren, Warren, and White counties). Must be a full time student studying in the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts who has demonstrated financial need with a minimum High School GPA of 3.0. This scholarship may be renewed for up to four years.

Mills-Isbell and Dr. J. Thomas Mills, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of James Thomas Mills, Sr., Isabella Webster Mills, Joseph David Isbell, Sr., Susie Hollins Isbell, and Dr. J. Thomas Mills, Jr, former President of Cumberland University from 1989 to 1991. This award is given to a student, regardless of need, that works in the maintenance department or in the Office of the President as their financial assistance work study assignment. The primary donors of this scholarship are the late Dr. J. Thomas Mills and his family.

Monty & Pace Pope Scholarship For History & International Students
Established by Mrs. Pace Pope and her husband, the late Mr. Monty Pope, this award will support students majoring in history and/or students who are classified as international students. The Popes were longtime employees of Cumberland University working in admissions and our history program and this award celebrates their loyal years of service to the university. Recipients should have financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Initial awards should be made to incoming freshmen with a minimum GPA of 3.00. The scholarship may be renewed for up to four years if a GPA of 2.75 is maintained. Applicants must submit an essay on why this scholarship support is needed.

This scholarship is awarded to a Trousdale County High School student that grew up on a farm. The recipient of this scholarship does not have to be need based. This scholarship may be awarded to multiple students within an academic year.

Nina Mae Weatherly & Charles Ballard Weatherly Trust Endowed Scholarship
The wills of the late Nina Mae and Charles Ballard Weatherly have established a trust fund to provide scholarships for students majoring in primary and/or secondary education who would not be able to attend or remain at the University without financial assistance. The recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Mr. and Mrs. Weatherly were long-time residents of Wilson County, Tennessee. Mrs. Weatherly was a former teacher, principal and central office supervisor in the Wilson County School System. Mr. Weatherly was a retired employee of the Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation and a real estate agent.

Notes for Nurses Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will benefit full-time undergraduate students who are upper division nursing students. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA and have a financial need.The student must also attend one nursing advisory council event such as Notes for Nurses, within the calendar year that the award was granted. Funds from this scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books and fees.

Paul Cavert Stumb, V Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is being established to celebrate the life and legacy of Paul Cavert Stumb, V. Paul graduated from Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta. He graduated from Auburn University, where he served as president of Sigma Chi, and after graduation, served as House Corp adviser. Paul received an MBA from Mississippi State University. He was a commercial banker for SunTrust, Bank of America, and most recently served as VP of Commercial & Corporate Banking at Capital Bank. Paul was an Eagle Scout and a committed member of West End United Methodist Church. Active in the community, he served on the board of United Way and was Chairman of the Board of Bethany Christian Services in Nashville. Paul was honored in 2012 as one of the Nashville Business Journal 30 under 30 recipients.
This scholarship will benefit full-time undergraduate students that are Labry School students and has and maintains a 3.0 GPA. The funds from this scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, fees and books.

Paul M. Bauman Scholarship
Preference for this scholarship is given first to the children of employees of John Deal Coatings, Inc., then to the employees of John Deal Coatings, Inc., and finally to graduates of Mt. Juliet High School (Tennessee). Recipient must be an incoming freshman with an ACT score of 19 and a high school GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. This scholarship was established in 1997 by Mrs. Judy Bauman in memory of her husband, a former member of Cumberland University’s Board of Trust.

Phoenix Ball Endowed Scholarship
The first Phoenix Ball was held in 1984 and was created by Mrs. Mary Clement, who, at the time, served as First Lady of Cumberland University to President Bob Clement. Mary created the Phoenix Ball to serve as the University’s signature event. She and a dedicated group of volunteers felt that it would be a way to raise the visibility of Cumberland in the greater Nashville area, raise funds for Cumberland’s deserving students, and, lastly, provide a memorable evening of dancing, dining, and entertainment for attendees. During the early years of the Ball, funds raised were used for various projects around campus, including the purchase of library books, carpeting for Memorial Hall, and other priority projects needed for the campus. In recent years, the funds have been allocated to support scholarships for deserving students.
This scholarship will benefit full-time undergraduate students that have and maintain a 2.8 GPA. This scholarship will be awarded solely based on merit and financial need. The funds from this scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books and fees.

Phoenix Ball's Al Ashworth & Dallus Whitfield Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established to celebrate the life and legacies of Al “Pony” Ashworth and Dallus Whitfield celebrating their capturing the Phoenix Ball with photos over the many years that this event has been at Cumberland University. This scholarship will benefit a full time undergraduate student from Wilson County that maintains a 3.0 GPA. Recipients must complete a scholarship application and essay and submit the application. Once a student has been selected the scholarship will be available to renew up to 8 semesters if student maintains 3.0 GPA and remains in good standing with the University.

Reid & Margaret Midgett Bobo Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Ms. Susan P. Lott, niece of Mrs. Bobo, at her request. The Bobos were lifelong residents of Wilson County, Tennessee. The scholarship is based on need and shall be awarded for no more than eight (8) semesters to any one student. The recipient shall have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale. The award may remain intact as long as the recipient maintains a minimum of a 2.80 GPA.

Resurgam Endowed Scholarship
Resurgam is Latin for: “I shall rise.” This scholarship was established in recognition of the challenges of students who are in substance use recovery. This scholarship is primarily for a student who is in active recovery from substance use. Consideration will also be given to students whose parents are in recovery for substance use.
This scholarship will benefit full-time undergraduate students who are currently in recovery or whose family has been impacted by addiction. The recipient will also be a Criminal Justice major or students pursuing a major that will lead to a career that will benefit those in recovery (for example, addiction counselors). Funds from this scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, fees and books.

Robert Carver Bone M.D. Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship, honoring Dr. Bone for his twenty-two years of outstanding service as Chairman of the Cumberland University Board of Trust, is awarded to a student with a high school grade point average of a 3.5 based on a 4.0 scale and an ACT score of 25. First priority will be given to any nursing major and second priority will be given to a student majoring in any ofthe pre-professional majors. The student must also have a financial need. The award can be made for no more than eight (8) semesters and the student must maintain a 3.50 GPA to renew the scholarship.

Robert L. & Susan K. McDonald Scholarship
Established in 2017 through gifts by members of the Cumberland University Board of Trust, this scholarship fund recognizes the exemplary leadership of Robert L. McDonald as Board Chairman from June 2013 to May 2017. Priority consideration for this scholarship will be given to students who have earned an Associate’s Degree through the Tennessee Promise Program at Cumberland University. The intent is to aid such students as they continue their studies toward a Bachelor’s Degree. Financial need will be the primary factor in selecting recipients. Once a student is selected as a recipient of a McDonald Scholarship, the award will automatically renew each year as long as the student remains in good standing with the University and maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA. This award can be made for no more than four semesters to any one student. Recipients must complete a scholarship application and essay and submit by the appropriate due date.

The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Cumberland University. This scholarship was established in 1991 by the Robison Family in Memory of Joseph Alexander Robison, Fount Love Robison, a 1931 graduate of Cumberland University and a member of the Cumberland University Sports Hall of Fame, Ransom Shannon Robison, a 1934 graduate of Cumberland University and a member of the Cumberland University Sports Hall of Fame, and David McGill Robison, a 1928 graduate of Cumberland University and a member of the Board of Trust of Cumberland University.

Given by S.S. Chapman in honor of his brother-in-law Shelton Close, and his sister, Martha Pearl Close, this scholarship is awarded to a freshman student who resides in DeKalb County, Tennessee.

Shine Where You Are Planted Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship may be from any state and may receive the scholarship more than once. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and have financial need. The recipient must also complete a scholarship application and be in good standing with the University.

Starks Family Scholarship
This scholarship benefits high school graduates in Robertson, Sumner and Warren Counties. The Starks Family Scholarship fund was established by Wayne and Stella Starks to honor Wayne’s parents, Odell and Esterlene Starks, and Stella’s mother, Tennie Mae Floyd. A graduate of White House High School and Cumberland University, Wayne Starks is a member of the university’s Board of Trust and the Cumberland Sports Hall of Fame. Starks is an entrepreneur and attributes his success to his upbringing in Middle Tennessee and studies at Cumberland University. “Stella and I both grew up there, as did our parents and many other members of our family. Even though we now live in Columbus, Ga. and Amelia Island, Fla., we want to give something back to the place that gave us so much.”

Stephen Heydel Memorial Scholarship
The Stephen Heydel Memorial Scholarship was established through a generous donation from his family. Stephen Heydel or “Steve” as he was known, attended both Cumberland University and the University of Tennessee where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Additionally, he attended the University of Tennessee Law School. Steve had a passion for acting and theater, performing as a student in Cumberland productions and after graduation in the local community theater. He also had an avid interest in British and European History. Recipients must be a student pursuing either an undergraduate or graduate degree in Theater. Scholarship recipients must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. Priority consideration for this scholarship will be US Military Personal (Active Duty, Reserve or Veterans). The student recipient may receive the Scholarship for a maximum of six (6) semesters.

Steven V. & Fannie Elizabeth Trigg Scholarship
This award is given to worthy young men and women from Wilson County, Tennessee. This scholarship was established by the late Lebanon, Tennessee businessman, Haden Trigg, to honor the memory of his parents. Mr. Trigg owned a ladies ready-to-wear shop on the town square. Mr. Trigg was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, and his civic and community interests were related to his association both with his church and with Cumberland University.

Susan Reeves Howell Endowed Scholarship in Education
This scholarship is established to honor the life and legacy of Susan’s work in ESL and her focus on mentorship elevating so many other teachers.
Susan Reeves Howell was born in Atlanta, GA and she taught Spanish and English for more than 35 years. Her career started in Clinton, TN. Then, she taught English and Spanish for two years at Rhea Central in Dayton, TN prior to coming to Metro Nashville Public Schools. She was a past president of Tennessee Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TN-TSOL). And, she was acting head of Metro Nashville School’s ESL department when she retired.
Her excellence in teaching elevated her to an advisory role for the district and eventually became a national ESL advisor and consultant. Mrs. Howell was named Exemplary Educator by the U.S. Department of Education. Indeed, she was one of the leading experts for ESL, English as a Second Language, and was one of the national consultants in that field. She loved to travel, especially cruises with her husband, and enjoying the world.
This scholarship is being established to assist deserving students in their pursuit of a degree in teaching and may be used for tuition, room and board, books, and fees.
This scholarship will benefit full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are in good academic standing in the school of education and intend to pursue ESL as a specific focus and specialty.

Susan Rene McGee Scholarship
This scholarship, established in memory of Susan Rene McGee, is given to a female Lebanon, Tennessee high school graduate who has a 3.0 GPA while being enrolled full-time with an area of academic focus in pre-law. The award is renewable only if there is not a qualified freshman applicant the following year and the current recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA and full-time status.

St. Philip's Scholarship
The St. Philip’s Scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from Mrs. Laura W. Cooke. This scholarship honors the life of her husband, John W. Cooke, Jr., CU alum, who served as Chief Clerk for the State Senate of the Tennessee General Assembly.
Recipients must be a high school senior who is a member of the St. Philip’s congregation, who has earned a minimum HS GPA of 3.0. with a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship may be renewed provided the recipient maintains full-time status and a 3.0 GPA. The student recipient may receive the Scholarship for a maximum of four (4) years or eight (8) semesters. The student recipient will be recommended by the Rector of the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Donelson, Tennessee.
Mrs. Cooke was an active member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. She served on the vestry, was a member of the Altar Guild, was a trustee of the Columbarium and for years assisted with counting the collection money. Laura was a member of the Canby Robinson Society. -
The Lucy Lee - Leadership Wilson Scholarship
This scholarship will give first priority to a Youth Leadership Wilson Alumni, then to Adult Leadership Wilson Alumni and finally to family members of Leadership Wilson Alumni. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a 22 ACT or equivalent and be in good standing with the University. Recipient will be a student who has proven leadership qualities as demonstrated through activities and leadership roles. The recipient of this scholarship must be a Wilson County resident and demonstrate financial need.

The Pay It Forward Scholarship
Presented by the Cumberland University Alumni Association Board of Directors established by the Cumberland University Alumni Association Board of Directors. The Pay It Forward scholarship will be awarded based on need and will go towards covering books and fees. Students applying must complete a current issues assignment in order to be eligible. Recipients must attend one alumni board meeting and are highly encouraged to attend alumni sponsored events.
Criteria: A recipient must have financial need and is expected to attend one alumni board meeting during the calendar year. The recipient will also be encouraged to attend alumni sponsored events. The student may be asked to speak at alumni events and appear in Cumberland University media as a representative of the scholarship. First-time recipients must have either an ACT score of 20 or a GPA of 2.75.

The Rev. Dan L. Garrett Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The recipient of the scholarship must be a full time undergraduate students with financial need. The recipient must have minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum score of 21 on the ACT or equivalent on the SAT. This scholarship is renewable up to four years if the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and is in good standing with the University.

The Stark Goodbar Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship must be a Lebanon High School graduate with high grades who has demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership qualities in school, church, or youth organizations and who is also in financial need.

The Victor C. Ahles Memorial Scholarship
Established by Judge Rodney V. Ahles, LL.B. (1958) in honor of his father, this scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior pre-law student with a GPA of 2.50 or higher based on all course work taken at the collegiate level.

Thomas Gordon Mason Scholarship
This scholarship is need-based and is for the use and benefit of deserving students of Wilson County, Tennessee. Mr. Mason was the son of John B. Mason who served as Sheriff of Wilson County. He retired from a management position at Union Carbide in Charleston, West Virginia.

Tom H. Proctor Memorial Scholarship
Carrie Elizabeth Proctor’s father, Tom H. Proctor aspired to attend Cumberland but was not afforded the opportunity. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time Cumberland student that displays a well-rounded academic and extracurricular background, demonstrates a financial need to further his or her higher education, is a person of high moral character, and maintains a grade point average of 3.0.

Tyler McChurch Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Dan McChurch and family, in memory of their son, Tyler, who lost his life in a tragic car accident at the age of 29. Tyler was a standout student athlete for the Bulldog football team and graduated from Cumberland University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2007. This award will support Wilson County, Tennessee high school graduates who demonstrate life skills that best resemble and represent Tyler. Recipients should have a goal-oriented personality, a determination to succeed, and character traits that reflect leadership and cooperation. The scholarship decision will not focus solely on academic merit, but will take into consideration other marks of student excellence including involvement in athletics, extracurricular activities, school organizations, and school functions. In addition, spirituality will also be a major consideration in evaluating applications for this award.

Virginia and Richard Lawlor Scholarship
This award is made annually to a student with a fine arts or humanities/social science major. Mrs. Lawlor was a graduate and faculty member of Cumberland University and served as a Life Trustee of the University. Additionally, she was awarded the Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) in 1989 and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1997.

Virginia Neely Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded annually to an academically qualified student who shows evidence of financial need with first consideration given to a student who is majoring in education or nursing.

W. L. Baker Memorial Scholarship
Mrs. Ann Sloan, beloved daughter of Rev. W. L. Baker established this scholarship in honor and memory of her father. Rev. Baker received his Bachelor of Science from Cumberland University in 1930. At the time of his death in August 2013 at the age of 105, it was believed that he was the University’s oldest living alumnus. This scholarship benefits full-time undergraduate students with a preference given to incoming freshmen that have graduated from a high school within Wilson County, Tennessee. Recipient must have financial need and must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. The scholarship is available for all semesters approved by the University and supports tuition, fees, room and board, and books.

William Goodbar & Blanche Catron Endowed Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is awarded to a full-time student from Wilson County, Tennessee. The recipient must have an ACT score of 20 and a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale, and be pursuing a degree in education. Mr. Catron graduated from Cumberland University in 1926 and Mrs. Catron in 1936. Mr. Catron was a local businessman, pilot, and a member of the Tennessee Air National Guard. Mrs. Catron was awarded the Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) from in 1998 and The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2001. The Catron Alumni House on campus is named in their honor.

Washer/Skinner/Brooks Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who is a relative of a former Cumberland student enrolled during the years of 1956 through 1982. The recipient must have a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and an ACT score of 20 or an equivalent SAT score. The award will be based on need and given to a student who has displayed outstanding citizenship. The scholarship may remain intact if the student maintains a 2.8 GPA and is making normal progress toward graduation. The award can be made for no more than eight semesters. This scholarship is named for the late David L. Skinner (1967) and the late Kenneth W. Brooks (1967) as well as Van Washer who served for many years as coach of both Cumberland University varsity basketball and baseball teams.

Will D. Young, Dr. Graves H. Thompson, Dr. James Robert Bone, Dr. John Newton Bone, and William Kerr Bassett Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a Cumberland University junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipient must display a balanced, well-rounded academic and extracurricular educational experience as well as a yearning for knowledge and awareness of his/her chosen area of study. Mr. Young was a former member of the history faculty at Cumberland University and previously served as Academic Dean of the institution.

William Carl & Palmer P. Clark Scholarship
Established by Malinda J. Perrotta in memory of her parents. William Carl Clark, a McMinnville, Tennessee, native, graduated from Cumberland University in 1935 and later from George Washington University School of Law, as well as earning a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration. The scholarship is based on need and awarded to a pre-law student. The recipient must have a high school GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a 2.80 GPA, makes normal progress toward a degree as a full-time student and conducts him or herself in an appropriate manner.

William Edgar & Frances Duke Green Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of William Edgar and Frances Duke Green by their daughter Mrs. Frances Green Oliver. The recipient must be from Tennessee and have a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and/or an ACT composite score of 20 or above, or equivalent SAT score. The student must be majoring in Humanities or Social Sciences. The student also must demonstrate financial need. The scholarship may be received for eight semesters as long as the student maintains a full-time student status and maintains a GPA of at least a 2.8 while enrolled at Cumberland University. Mr. Green graduated from the Cumberland University School of Law in 1924 and was a regional director of the United States Securities Exchange Commission.

William Donnel Baird Scholarship
Honoring William D. Baird, BA, LL.B (1930, 1931), the late State Senator, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House of Representatives of the State of Tennessee, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving Cumberland University student. The recipient is selected by the University.

William Perkins Freeman Scholarship
Mr. William Perkins Freeman, a lifelong friend and former student of Cumberland University, established this scholarship at Cumberland University. The award is need-based and given to a student from Robertson or Sumner Counties in Tennessee. Recipient shall have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale.

William Randolph Hearst Nursing Endowed Scholarship
This endowed fund was established in 1999 by a grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to provide scholarship support for professional study in undergraduate nursing. To be eligible for awards, students must be full-time with a declared major in nursing. Preference is given to students active in campus and community activities. Applicants must submit an essay in which they explain their professional goals and how they plan to contribute to the healthcare field and to their communities after graduation. Students selected for the Hearst Scholarships will be required to maintain a 2.8 GPA, with no grade lower than a “C” in any nursing course.

Wilson Bank & Trust Scholarship
Established by Wilson Bank & Trust of Lebanon, Tennessee for a student who is a child of an employee of Wilson Bank & Trust. The scholarship will be awarded based on need to a student with a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship may be received for eight semesters as long as the student maintains a full-time student status and maintains a GPA of at least a 2.8 while enrolled at Cumberland University.

Winstead Paine Bone III Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student who maintains at least a 3.0 GPA and is a business major at Cumberland University. Financial need will be a determining factor in selecting the recipient for this scholarship award.
