First-time freshmen nursing students at Cumberland University will officially begin living in the new 4SOUTH Living and Learning Community (LLC) during the Fall 2022 semester. 

LLCs are on-campus residential communities dedicated to a specific academic program, major or theme. LLCs provide a unique campus experience where like-minded students can easily connect and support each other while pursuing a common goal or interest. 

4SOUTH is located on the 4th floor of South Hall and has customized study spaces equipped with all the tools necessary for academic success. With computer study stations, comfortable lounge seating, a TV, printer, whiteboards, and a community kitchenette, students can have a space to study and relax.

Statistically, students in LLCs have higher academic success rates, higher college graduation rates, higher levels of satisfaction with college experiences, and an easier time building community. 

During a trial period in the Fall 2021 semester, Cumberland nursing students who lived at 4SOUTH had an overall higher GPA than those who lived elsewhere. By creating a peer support network, students are more likely to succeed in Cumberland’s rigorous nursing program. 

First-semester nursing student Carol Anne Clanton spoke about how 4SOUTH has helped her build relationships with fellow nursing students. 

“Starting nursing school has definitely been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” said Clanton. “But living with other people who have been through the same thing that I’m going through is really encouraging. Our shared experience really bonds us and helps bring us together as a community.”
