Cumberland University Esports program and Director Spencer Claypool are finalists for EsportsU’s Program and Director of the Year.
EsportsU is the Collegiate Esports Commissioner Cup (CECC) held every year in Arlington, Texas, and is the largest Esports event in all of North America, with numerous colleges competing for a National Championship over a handful of titles.
Coach Claypool started the program in the Fall of 2021 after finishing his Graduate degree as a graduate assistant for the Sports Information Department. Since then, Esports has seen tremendous growth. Starting with nine players and currently fielding ten competitive teams and 55 players.
Since the program’s conception, Cumberland University Esports has earned 18 Players of the Week, 20 All-conference Players and has obtained 13 Championships, including:

- -2X Mid-South Overwatch Conference Championship
- -Mid-South Valorant Conference Championship
- -Mid-South Rocket League Conference Championship
- -NECC Valorant Champions Division Conference Championship

- -ECAC NBA 2k Conference Championship
- -ECAC Madden Conference Championship
- -NACE Varsity Plus Conference Championship
- -Redbull Campus Clutch Delta Regional Championship
“This is such a surreal moment; since starting this program, my goal has been to create the best esports program while giving the opportunity for my players to compete in something they love.” Said Coach Claypool, “I am blessed that the program and I are finalists, and we finally get to show off all the hard work we have done over the years!”
