The recession has not hampered Cumberland University. With a record number of students enrolled in classes the University is making room for the growth it is experiencing.
University officials and community members broke ground on a future residence hall Friday, October 1.
When construction is complete – Fall 2011, the $8 million residence hall will be home for about 150 upper and lower level students. The four-person suites will be designed for the 21st century student and will feature modern amenities, state-of-the-art technology, and a learning space for instruction and group study.
The recent growth in enrollment can be attributed to the many efforts across campus that have been strengthened including retention and academic quality.

“This groundbreaking is a signal that Cumberland cares about the student.” said Dr. Harvill Eaton, President of the University. “This hall says that we are getting bigger and better and it is also a sign that we continue to excel when it comes to academic offerings.”
The contractor is Steed Brothers Construction located in Lebanon, and the architect is Nashville based Earl Swensson Associates, Inc.The construction of the residence hall will compliment renovations made to the dining facility earlier this summer aimed at improving life on campus. Both projects were designed to provide students with the best in new facilities for living, learning and recreation.
The residence hall will be located on the south-east edge of campus on McClain Avenue.
Anticipated completion of the project is Fall 2011.
