Ted Rose, a nationally-recognized artist and author, and professor in Cumberland University’s School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts, will be awarded the 2016 Joe W. Giles Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tennessee Arts Academy (TAA) on July 15.
The award is conferred upon a Tennessee teacher whose life’s work is widely acknowledged to have positively influenced the role of the arts in education, thereby benefiting the students of Tennessee’s schools, according to TAA. Rose has influenced the field of arts through his role as an artist, author, consultant, and educator for more than 35 years. He has taught at Cumberland since 2008.
“Ted shatters the convention that, ‘Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.’ He is both an excellent artist and an excellent teacher and mentor to our Fine Arts students. He does more than teach art, he develops young people holistically through their art and gives them a solid foundation for success in their lives after college, regardless of what profession they eventually pursue,” said Eric Cummings, dean of CU’s School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts.
Rose’s artwork, which explores a diverse range of concepts and content, from highly-detailed works to more abstract pieces, is displayed in more than 300 private collections and more than 100 corporate collections, including the collections of several Fortune 500 companies. He has had 21 solo exhibitions in seven states, six international exhibitions, and has received more than 50 awards for his work. Rose also is an accomplished author, with his top-selling secondary education textbook, Discovering Drawing, currently in its third edition. He has also served as keynote speaker for state art conferences in five states and has worked extensively with fine arts organizations as an instructor and board member. These organizations include the Tennessee Arts Academy, the Governor’s School for the Arts, and state fine arts programs in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.
