Hispanic Heritage Month is a time of reflection, celebration, and education. We recognize the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States. This Hispanic Heritage Month, Cumberland University’s Latino Association, Futuro, partnered with the Art of Life to honor and commemorate this significant month by organizing a Celebrating Voices event, including the visit of Executive Director and Board Member of Futuro, Jennifer Novo, renowned artist, Andres Bustamante, and a performance by Ballet Folklorico sol de Mexico. 

Futuro is an inclusive organization committed to creating equitable opportunities in education, our communities, and the workplace. It strives to enhance the quality of life for the underserved and underrepresented in our communities through education, leadership training, service, strong partner networks, and civic engagement. Such clubs play a crucial role in fostering community and empowerment among Hispanic students and those interested in learning about Hispanic culture.

One of the celebration’s highlights was the visit of a talented artist, Andres Bustamantes, whose work is rooted in his unique cultural and experiential history. Through art, music, or dance, cultural art uniquely conveys stories, traditions, and the essence of heritage. The event entertained and educated attendees, offering a window into the beauty and complexity of Hispanic culture.

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just a celebration of culture; it’s an opportunity for dialogue and learning. The event organized by Cumberland University’s Futuro club allowed students and the broader campus community to engage with and appreciate a piece of the rich tapestry of Hispanic heritage. 

Events like these have several benefits. They provide an opportunity for Hispanic students to connect with their roots, share their culture, and feel a sense of belonging on campus. For non-Hispanic students, it’s a chance to broaden their horizons and deepen their cultural understanding, fostering inclusivity and appreciation for different cultures and promote cultural competence and empathy.

This celebration of Hispanic voices at Cumberland University showcases the commitment to diversity on campus. Through art, music, and cultural engagement, Futuro brought the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic heritage to the forefront, enriching the educational experience of all students. These events inspire us all to embrace the uniqueness of our backgrounds and the contributions of others to our community.
