Established in 1978, the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) was created to recognize Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) who demonstrate an unwavering dedication to supporting Tennessee’s accounting students through providing annual scholarship funds. Each year, the TSCPA plays a pivotal role in empowering multiple Cumberland University students pursuing their Accounting degree. As the 2023-2024 academic year began, $28,000 in scholarships were awarded to four exceptional Accounting students, Grace Jackson, Joshua Page, Austin Felts, and Teoria Woods.
This year’s scholarship recipients have collectively earned the largest award in Cumberland history from the TSCPA, an accomplishment that underscores the caliber of talent and passion found in the Labry School of Business.
Professor of Accounting, Mary Lewis Haley, understands the value of both personal and professional development of her students and the undeniable benefits of organizational memberships like TSCPA.
“All our accounting majors are highly encouraged to become student members of the Tennessee Society of CPAs, a gateway to eventually joining the American Institute of CPAs, both of which are free resources,” said Haley. “Professional Development and organizational membership opens doors to networking opportunities, student programming, resume enhancement, CPA exam review course discounts, mentorship, and of course, the chance to secure valuable scholarships. It is vital that our students have experiences outside of the classroom to further their knowledge and success.”
Cumberland University Junior, Austin Felts, received the Calvin and Jean King Foundation Award, making him one of just four recipients in the entire state.
“My scholarship from the Calvin and Jean King Foundation and TSCPA has helped my college experience tremendously. The scholarship lightens my financial burden and allows me to focus more on my coursework, networking, and leadership roles at Cumberland- all of which I know will prove to be beneficial for my future,” said Felts. “Without Dr. Haley’s encouragement to join the TSCPA and apply for their scholarships; I would have never had this opportunity and I’m so thankful to be awarded this scholarship and can’t wait to further my career as a future CPA.”
Another scholarship recipient, Teoria Woods, exemplifies the spirit of the CU Phoenix as a TSCPA student ambassador bridging the gap between Cumberland Accounting students and the TSCPA, benefitting from chapter meetings and special student nights that foster networking opportunities.

As a growing institution, Cumberland takes immense pride in our students’ achievements, and remains deeply grateful to the TSCPA for their continued support. As we continue to break barriers and set new milestones with record-breaking enrollment, we continue to witness our students surpassing expectations and achieving extraordinary results.
