A Day to Remember: Your Generosity’s Impact on Commencement Weekend

By Sam Hatcher, Chairman, CU Board of Trust & Alumnus, Class of ‘73, Cumberland University

Thank you on behalf of myself and the entire Cumberland University community for your generosity and support. Because of you, my first graduation as Chairman of the Board of Trust was incredible!

This ceremony was about more than just receiving diplomas; it was a joyous celebration of the hard work and personal growth over 700 new Cumberland alumnus have experienced throughout their time here.

There were unforgettable moments throughout the ceremony.  Former Chairman WP Bone was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the middle Tennessee community. And, Donald Graham’s speech really struck a chord with me. I hope his words about thinking for ourselves and looking beyond labels resonate with you beyond the political arena. “Trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in.” That’s the kind of wisdom that you all have operated in.

Your contributions played a crucial role in bringing graduation to life. Through initiatives like “The Final Stretch” campaign, which raised over $30,000, your generosity made the difference for our graduates.

Mr. Graham’s journey – from his career at The Washington Post to his work with initiatives like the District of Columbia College Access Program and TheDream.US – was truly inspiring. It’s another testament of the impact we have when we give back to each other.

Thank you for being a part of Cumberland’s history, it has meant the world to us and has made a real impact on the lives of our students.
