Cumberland University Image Use Policy
Cumberland University reserves the right to capture and use images of recognizable individuals for print and digital marketing purposes. According to federal law, there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in public, as it is a constitutional right to photograph things and subjects visible in public spaces. The Image Use Policy applies to students, faculty, staff, alumni and all other campus visitors.
Under Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA) law, photographs of students may be considered directory information, unless the individual has explicitly requested in writing that his/her directory information not be disclosed. As a result, enrolled students are required to comply with all of Cumberland University’s policies, including the Image Use Policy. In this policy, Cumberland notifies you that your image may be used for marketing purposes at any given time while in public spaces on campus. By accepting to abide by all Cumberland University policies and by entering campus, you are consenting to have your photo taken at any given time and to be used for marketing purposes, including social media.
Responsible use of images captured will be exercised by the Office of Marketing and Communications to prevent false light claims. Image manipulation is not practiced by the Office of Marketing and Communications, with the exception of minimal use of professional grade photo presets.
The Office of Marketing and Communications does not currently practice obtaining specific photography consent release forms, as there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in public spaces on campus, including but not limited to:
-The Quad/Outdoors
-Classrooms
-Phillips Dining Hall
-LCC
-Labry Hall
-Athletic Facilities
If an individual does not wish to be photographed for Cumberland University marketing purposes, it is required that the individual reach out directly to the Office of Marketing and Communications before the student arrives on campus. Please email communications@cumberland.edu to officially document your wish to opt out.
