On Oct. 22, Cumberland University and the greater Lebanon community rallied around Director of Student Life Libby O’Guin at a Pink Out football game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Over $12,000 was raised during the entire month of October through various events hosted by student organizations as well as the Pink Out game’s ticket sales and proceeds from shirts and bracelets. This amount was given directly to O’Guin, her husband and two children to assist with medical expenses and other costs. 

O’Guin was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer only a few months after receiving normal mammogram results. Since she began working full-time at Cumberland in the 1990s, O’Guin has had a significant influence on students. Her passion for student life began during her undergraduate studies when she was actively involved on campus in Athletics and Greek Life and was even named Miss Cumberland. 

“I want to say the most sincere thank you to every single person for every donation, shirt purchased and all the time and energy put toward fundraising for me,” said O’Guin. “My family and I are able to have medical financial burdens lifted and that is a huge blessing. The Cumberland Family and the Lebanon community have been, and continue to be, extremely supportive and uplifting. I could never say thank you enough.” 

Before the Pink Out game, she was presented with a keepsake box containing photos of memories and notes of encouragement from friends, current students, alumni, colleagues, and members of the community. The sunset that night had a vibrant pink hue that was fitting for the night of Breast Cancer Awareness. 

Breast Cancer affects over 266,000 women and men every year, according to the Center for Disease Control. October is a month dedicated to educating individuals about prevention efforts and supporting those going through difficult diagnoses.
